Simon Williams, also known as Wonder Man, first appeared in The Avengers #9 (October 1964). Initially an industrialist whose company suffered due to Tony Stark's competition, he was empowered by Baron Zemo with ionic energy, granting him superhuman strength, durability, and energy projection abilities.

Zemo manipulated Williams, using him as a pawn against the Avengers. Wonder Man seemingly sacrificed himself to save the team, becoming a martyr figure. However, his ionic form allowed him to eventually return to life.

Wonder Man has since become a long-standing member of the Avengers, often struggling with his identity and the implications of his artificial powers. He has also had a notable acting career, using his abilities in Hollywood.
